How to recover from a Google Penguin attack

In April 2012, Google rolled out a change to its ranking algorithmic. Google Penguin, as it became known, hits sites where it hurts; in their rankings. One year on, many websites haven’t recovered their lost traffic. Yet rehabilitation is possible. James Newhouse, of digital marketing agency Receptional.com is one of the few people with experience of managing a full recovery. Here, he outlines his Penguin recovery strategy.
In May 2012 Barry Schwartz, the executive editor of Search Engine Roundtable conducted a survey, asking his readers how they had been affected by Penguin. His survey discovered that 65% of the 1,000 people polled had been negatively affected by Penguin.
At the beginning of this year, he surveyed the same people to find out how many had recovered. The results showed that 94% of Google Penguin victims had not fully recovered

 Full Penguin recovery

As we near the one-year anniversary of Penguin – with more updates expected – here is a proven approach to getting your site back into its deserved position in Google’s listings.

Penguin pain

In April 2012, Receptional took on a new client, a major retailer. We can’t tell you who they are, but if you’re based in the UK, you’ll know the name, and we were very excited about working with them.
Two days later the client received an “unnatural link” warning via Google’s Webmaster Tools Oh dear. The website’s traffic plummeted by 62%.
Keyword rankings, including those for the site’s brand name, had dropped by as many as 50 places in the search engine results. This was a real worry for a retailer that received around 70% of its organic traffic from brand name searches.
No other Receptional clients were affected by Penguin. And, at first, the update didn’t even have a name. So, all we could do was investigate.
We discovered that the drop in traffic had two causes:
  • a manual penalty against ‘link spam’ and
  • an algorithmic penalty, later confirmed as Penguin
Here’s a graph showing how our client’s traffic disappeared:
Google Analytics increased organic search
Figure 1: A screenshot from Google Analytics showing the drop in traffic for our client due to two link-based penalties.

Our Penguin recovery plan

Our team decided on two main objectives. In the short term, we had to create alternative traffic sources to replace the lost revenue. This would give us time to investigate the penalties further and decide how to overcome them. And the second, of course, was to recover as quickly as possible.
So, here’s what we did:
  1. Our PPC team set up a “brand only” campaign so that searchers were still able to find our client in the search results.
  2. At the same time, we built a new website on a fresh domain. The domain name was very similar to the client’s existing site, and very quickly we were able to rank for the client’s main brand term.
  3. Once the new domain was ranking well, we were able to stop spending on the PPC campaign. We were able to focus on investigating the reasons for the penalties.

Penguin hunting

We kicked off with a review of all of the site’s backlinks. We wanted to understand why the client had been penalized.
Using Majestic SEO’s backlink data as well as Google’s Webmaster Tools data we discovered that the site had been affected by a negative SEO campaign targeted at a partner site that linked directly to our client. The attack planted hidden links within the CSS page styling. The attacker had used hidden anchor text that a search engine spider would clearly recognize as spam.
Luckily, this problem was easily fixed. We made contact with the relevant webmasters, who removed the links. We then submitted a re-inclusion request to Google, and waited to hear back.
When we did, the news wasn’t good. The re-inclusion request had been denied.
Oh dear! (To put it mildly) We clearly needed to investigate further.

Adapting the strategy in line with this new Google update

Google’s main objective with the Penguin update was to improve the quality of its search results. Google was penalizing websites with an unnatural back link profile – often due to black hat techniques – by giving them lower rankings.
We went for a “back to basics” approach. We decided to review of all of the site’s backlinks manually. Yes, that’s right. We downloaded all 30,000 backlinks into a spreadsheet and went through them one-by-one looking for spam.
It was a time-intensive method, but it gave us great insight into why our client had been hit.

A second penalty

First, we found a group of paid links that pointed at our client. We noticed, too, that the paid links pointed to other sites, which had also suffered from penalties.
However, the targeted websites were not suffering a penalty on their brand name. So, we concluded that there were two penalties at work: an algorithmic penalty (Penguin) and a manual penalty against the brand name.

Created a unique process for link removal pre Disavow tool

We wanted our second re-inclusion request to succeed, so we invented a system for categorizing and removing the backlinks.
Once we had identified spam links, we approached webmasters to get them removed. Often, this involved dealing with blackmail: webmasters attempted to cash in on the removal of malicious links, asking for fees to take them down. Others were simply uncooperative or didn’t reply to our requests.

 Our second re-inclusion request

We made a second re-inclusion request. This time we included a covering letter meticulously documenting our research and our process. We were able to list:
  • All links found – categorized by type and given a quality rating.
  • All links we had wanted removing – including emails sent, responses received and the webmasters’ details.
  • All the links we had managed to remove.
  • A list of links we couldn’t remove.
  • A list of paid banners and links that webmasters had refused to mark up as 'no follow'.
Again, this request was rejected.
It was clear that Google had imposed a threshold – a proportion of links that needed to be removed before re-inclusion would be granted – and we had failed to hit that threshold.
We were stuck.
But, we weren’t the only ones. And in July 2012, Google’s head of web spam, Matt Cutts, announced that Google would be creating a disavow tool as part of its Webmaster Tools suite.

Google releases the Disavow tool

As soon as the tool became available, we were able to add a list of links at both domain level (domain:sample.com) and link level, along with our comments.
We concluded that the disavow.txt file works in the same way as a robots.txt file. It is really just a list of domains/links that Google will ignore. Google treats the links pointing to your domain as if they don’t exist.
The team allowed six weeks for Google to re-crawl all of the links. Almost to the day, we received a message informing us that the manual (brand) penalty had been revoked.

 Use the Disavow tool wisely

If your site has been affected by Penguin, it is crucial that you use the disavow tool wisely. By manually assessing our client’s backlink profile we were able to provide Google with a focussed list of links to ignore; the tool gave us control of the small percentage of inbound links that had caused the problem.
It’s also crucial to know whether you’ve been affected by an algorithmic penalty, a manual penalty or both. There are easy ways of knowing, but that’s a whole separate blog post.
If you abuse the tool and ask Google to disavow links that aren’t in breach of its guidelines, you could do more harm than good. You’ll be undoing your previous link building efforts.
If you are unsure it is always best to ask an expert to review your backlinks.

 Successful re-inclusion

Our efforts meant that both the algorithmic and manual penalties were overcome. And, crucially, the client’s brand term returned to the top of Google’s results pages.
Our client not only started to appear in the search results again, but also experienced a 48% increase in its organic traffic, surpassing its original position before the link based penalties was imposed.

10 Tips to Create a Sales Page that Converts Prospects to Customers

You work your butt off for your clients, and they know it, but how do you convey this on the services page of your website without bragging too much or too little? It’s a balancing act that you CAN only figure out by testing to see what your clients like.
A lead usually comes from a referral. The referral could be weak or strong, but both can be very powerful if you have a solid system in place.
It could start with a friend named Tina referring her friend Stacy, who then of course goes to your website. If Stacy doesn’t feel engaged or comfortable right away, she’ll click away and probably never come back.
That’s it. Stacy either is intrigued by what you have to say or she isn’t.
There are ways to create a services page that engages and entices people and to avoid common “mistakes” that turn people off from buying from you.

Something I’ve Discovered

Over time, as I’ve worked with clients and their web sales pages, I’ve begun to see a pattern.  For example, let me tell you about a client named Carol.
Carol is a hard-working editor who struggled to get clients steadily coming to her. She cared about her clients, always met her deadlines, and did fantastic work. Yet there was a disconnect at some point in the sales funnel that she couldn’t figure out and change to her advantage.
She noticed that when it did rain, it poured. She either had too many clients or not enough. When she had too many clients a lot of them weren’t very good clients. But she took the jobs anyway because work had been slow.
She thought her sales page might not be effective, so she came to me.
We started off by looking at her website and I noticed 3 problems right away.
  1. The website started off by telling potential clients how much she would charge. (Price or fees should be last, because you have to convince them why she (or you) is worth it first.)
  2. She didn’t explain the benefits of hiring her.
  3. She lacked a powerful call to action with an easy way to contact her.
There is a lot to be said for creating a website with the equivalent of a velvet rope that raises the bar so high that you only bring in “ideal” people, but if your offer isn’t compelling enough and/or it’s not easy to contact you, you will be losing clients.
These kinds of mistakes are very easy to make. Even simple spelling errors on your sales page can mean the difference between a sale or not because it signals to a potential client that you don’t pay attention to details.
It’s hard to write and design your own sales page because you are so close to your business. You know the great value that you deliver, but explaining it is a whole different story.
So, over the years, I’ve designed a list of my top 10 rules to creating an engaging service page that converts potential prospects into customers. I’ll share it with you here, and I’ll give you examples and walk you step-by-step through your services page.

1. Create a Compelling Narrative

Some businesses tell a story about who they are and where they come from, while others weave a great story that sucks you in and convinces you to buy from them.
heart-of-business
Can you see what Mark did so cleverly on his Heart of Business sales page?
He compliments you as he explains who he likes to work with and asks if you are a good fit for his services.
Then he begins to create his “ideal client” velvet rope:
Steering through and staying true to your heart often requires a few things.
As you begin to read through this page, I’ll let you know that although I love working with clients, I can only handle a very few.
That said, if you’re a perfect fit and I have an opening, I’d love to support you.
He gets you excited about the possibility of working together within the first few sentences. You can’t help but keep reading.
Narrative Takeaway
Infuse Mark’s copywriting technique into your services page. For example, look at what past clients have said about their greatest struggles, ask your blog readers, Facebook followers and other outlets for feedback.  Then use their language to help craft your narrative.
When you can create a services page that walks them through the process of how you work with clients, they’ll see for themselves whether they are a good fit for you. If they believe you can help them, you’ve already done the hard work and now you just need to close the sale.

2. Leverage Great Design to Build Trust

The most important aspect of people actually reaching out to you, giving you their information, and being responsive when you message or call them is TRUST. If they land on your website and they don’t feel like they can trust you, then they will never reach out or call you.
Peter Shallard Client Sales Page
Peter Shallard’s client sales page is well-designed. You can see he put a lot of thought into who he is and what he offers. When you land on his site, you know he is serious about his business.
I have people who help me with designing my clients’ web sites, sales pages, and product launches. Design is not my superpower. Strategy is my USP that convinces people to buy from me. I know my superpower is understanding how a business owner can create a deeper connection with his/her audience.
Design Takeaway
When improving your design, you need to create emotional separation from it. If you can do this for yourself, that’s great. If not, I suggest bringing in an expert and have them look at your analytics and structure so they can give you tips on how to improve your conversion rate.
I know my strengths are marketing strategy and copywriting, so I have a team who help me design my sales pages and clients’ web sites, sales pages, and product launches. I also prefer a simple design to a cluttered one. I know what will work, but I’m not very good at creating the design itself.
If you believe in your idea and business never be afraid to hire someone you trust to help you convey your brand’s message.

3. Know Your Greatest Superpower (Your USP)

Your services page should focus on one major aspect of what you do well for your clients. I’ve reviewed services pages that give people 10 different options, and that is a huge mistake!
When you give people too many choices, you stymie their ability to choose. Your Unique Selling Position (USP) allows you to leverage your superpower and build interest in what you do.
Take a look at your sales page and ask yourself if you have only one main offer with the rest supporting the main offer.
In my case, I offer product launch strategy and support, and with this service comes copywriting and structure for sales pages, product development, launch implementation, etc.
I’ve made the mistake of going too specialized. I thought I could create a business just around Twitter parties. I was wrong. When I expanded out my main offer, my business took off.
Superpower Takeaway
Your service page will work well when you focus on providing one service well. If you try to do too many things for too many people you aren’t going to attract your ideal people.
The key here is to test out your service page on people who would be your ideal client. Ask them what they think your main offer is and how they think you can help them.

4. Share Your Technique

Giving people advice that is valuable can be a little surprising to people. Many companies will hide their best information from you, so you have to hire them. When you show people that you are confident in your work, they will be drawn to you.
It’s why I offer people a free product launch e-course when they sign-up for my newsletter updates. I know that they could probably use this information to make 10%-20% more money off their launch, but that’s ok. The people I want to be on my list and hire me will know that this is still a small percentage of everything I know. If they hire me, I could probably increase their sales by 30%-50%.
I tell people upfront the 3 biggest mistakes that they can make on their sales page free-of-charge. They might go back to their sales page and start working on these three mistakes, and that’s ok because they probably wouldn’t have hired me anyway. The people who do hire me know that I know my craft and I will help them increase their conversion rate and save them time and money.
DC-sales-page-final-500
I like to show people what they will get when they work with me. If they want to apply these free techniques to their sales page then I’ve done my job. I’ve earned a little bit of their trust. Eventually when they are ready to take their sales page or product launch to the next level I’ll be there to help them.
Sharing Takeaway
Show people that you aren’t afraid to share your expertise and help them see how valuable you can be to them. If you help people insulate their house, then explain the biggest energy drainers that most people miss. They might go to Home Depot and fix the issues themselves or they might not have the time or energy to do it. If you educated them and earned their trust, you will be the first company to come to mind when they are ready to invest in high quality insulation.

5. Be both Humble and Confident

Almost no one knows everything there is to know about their craft. In fact, my clients teach me new techniques and ideas all the time. When you work with someone, they need to know that you are willing to listen to their ideas and build on them. This humbleness is what will continue to help your business grow.
Of course if you feel like a client has a weak idea, you must be willing to tell them why and give a very good explanation. This confidence will show them that you are also willing to help them avoid mistakes.
This concept took me awhile to learn. Initially, I acted more confident than I was and I didn’t listen very well to the good ideas that my clients presented to me. Over time, I brought humbleness and confidence to every interaction I have with my clients, and my business grew.
Confidence Takeaway
People want to see that you believe in yourself — that’s why testimonials are so powerful. When they see that you’ve helped other people, they believe you can help them. The key is to be humble with how you present yourself. If you go overboard with praise, people will tune you out and click away. Finding the right balance humility and confidence will attract your “ideal” people.

6. Describe Benefits Clearly

The list of features of your service is great, but it lacks an emotional connection. That’s why I teach all my clients to focus on benefits instead of features.
The difference between the two are subtle, but critical. A feature is an aspect of what you deliver. A feature could be how your company is never late in meeting a deadline. That’s great, but what is the benefit to the buyer.
It’s better to say something like “When you work with me, I’ll always meet our deadline and keep your business on track”. It’s critical to build trust with your clients.
Benefits Takeaway
Look at what you offer and the benefit to your client. This is the type of copy you need to include on your services page. When you can paint the picture of how much better you’ll make their life, they will understand why they should hire you instead of your competitor.

7. Include Real Testimonials

I’ve seen so many services pages without testimonials. This still surprises me because testimonials are vital to proving the value you can provide potential buyers.
The key is to put real testimonials that don’t over-hype your services. Over-hyped testimonials feel fake and disingenuous. In contrast, the best testimonials tell a story.
lose-weight-photo-500
These three images over at Steve’s Rebel Fitness Guide tells a complete story in itself. Most businesses don’t have the luxury of having visual proof, so you will have to create a testimonial from your clients’ results. When you can back your work up with actual numbers from satisfied customers, that’s a story that will help sell your service.
Testimonial Takeaway
Use testimonials that tell a “before and after” story. Help your potential clients see how valuable your services are to people who are most like them. When you can use testimonials to paint a positive picture, prospective clients are more likely to trust you.

8. Make It Easy for People to Contact You

If you get someone interested in what you have to offer and they are ready to contact you and they can’t find the number to call or the contact form, you may lose the sale. Even a little extra time might make them lose their focus and click away before they reach out to you. The easier you make it for your ideal people to reach you, the more likely they’ll actually reach out.
For example, when you want someone to fill out a form, keep it simple and only ask for the most basic information that you need to contact them.
Contact Takeaway
Look at how people are able to contact you right now. What is your contact conversion rate? Look at how many people land on your services page and divide that by how many people actually fill out your form and submit it. That’s your contact conversion rate. Simple, but not many people calculate this number. To increase your conversion rate, you need to figure out how to make reaching out to you more enticing, and reduce the hesitation they feel before they fill out their information and send it to you.

9. Offer a Guarantee

If you have a big company or if you do everything online, a lot of people that buy from you might not actually ever meet you. You have to build trust into your services page, and offering a guarantee that you will deliver what is expected of you creates trust.
hampton-guarntee-500
In this example, you can see that Hampton guarnantee clearly states what they expect to provide you and hopefully exceed those expectations. By putting this in every hotel lobby, on their website, and now I’m talking about it, the more confidence people will have in staying at a Hampton hotel.
Guarantee Takeaway
Do you believe in the quality of your services? That’s sounds like a silly question I’m sure, but people need proof that you do. For example, if someone isn’t happy, how far will you go to make them happy? This is what you need to make very clear on your services page. It’s backing up your results with a guarantee that will make it easier for them to trust you and more likely for them to reach out to you for more information or to buy from you.

10. Create a Clear Call to Action

Your services page must direct people to the desired action that you want them to take. You can’t expect them to know what you want them to do next. Make your call to action (CTA) as clear and direct as you can.
The simple formula is [action you want them to take] and get [thing you are offering].
You can see in the example below that Yoast’s call to action is “Fill out the form” and get “your website review!”
Yoast-call-to-action-500
It specifically asks you to take the next step. Yoast created a simple call to action that converts well for him.
Call to Action Takeaway
Every service page needs to be clear on what is the next step you want your potential client to take. It might be filling out a form, calling you or hitting the buy now button. Whatever it is, make sure you are clear about the next action and the benefit of them taking that action.

Bonus Tip! Driving Focused Traffic

Being great at what you do is an accomplishment, but if people don’t know about you then you won’t be able to leverage all the knowledge that you have. This is why you need to stay hyper-focused on what you do well and drive targeted traffic to your services page.
You have to create a domino marketing effect to grow your business. One way to drive focused traffic to your sales page is to get a boost from past clients and from bloggers with authority who can showcase your expertise in public ways.
You have to be hyper-vigilant in where you market yourself. You can’t be everywhere so you need to choose a few places to be a dominant player and make sure you are so valuable, people can’t help but talk about you.
Focused Traffic Takeaway
Look at where you’ve had the most success to date. Then think about how you can expand this and improve the quality of traffic to your website. Look at where your ideal people hang out and be the expert in this area.
Improving Your Service Page
Creating or improving your service page can seem overwhelming if you don’t have the right tools. But if you follow my top 10 rules, you should have a great start to connect with your audience and show them how well you deliver on your services.
The key is to improve your services page as you go along. You will never have the perfect services page. You’ll always miss out on some buyers as you hone in on your ideal clients. That’s ok. You want to make sure you are working with people that build your confidence and truly enjoy working with you.

How To Profit With Pay Per Click

The economic downturn is causing more and more companies to switch to pay per click advertising. After all, as we all know, it’s easy, inexpensive, and pretty effective. However, there are some problems we all need to watch out for. Click fraud is a real problem, and can eat into your funds, resulting in little to no profit. If you want to keep your costs down, you’ll know how to reduce click fraud and increase your revenues.

Pay per click advertising requires you to pay the search engine every time someone click’s on your link. Click fraud is when someone clicks just to make money for the site carrying your ad, or to do damage to your sales. It’s important not to waste your advertising money, but more and more of us are. Fifty-seven percent of advertising dollars online are spent on pay per click, and the increase in click fraud is causing some real damage. Seventeen percent of all online ad clicks last year weren’t the real thing.

Yahoo and Google are the two biggest networks, and they say they have it under control. However, Google’s statistics are much different, saying that fake clicks are just two percent of all online activity. If Google agrees with you that a click is fraudulent, they’ll give you back a credit, but you have to get them to agree. Yahoo says that before working to diminish click fraud, their rate was closer to twelve to fifteen percent – something that sounds a little more accurate. They now say it’s down to about thirteen percent.

Of course, it can be tricky to tell real clicks from fake ones. However, there are a couple of methods we can all employ. For instance, if you get a click from an IP address connected with an area you don’t serve or have customers in, you might be looking at a faker. Alternatively, you might get a lot of clicks in a very short period. That can indicate fraudulent activity, too. Do the bulk of clicks come from one source? It’s not an indicator of guilt, but it is a red flag, as is a visit that’s very short – just a few seconds on each page before another click.

Click fraud is largely fueled by sites that host your ads, and which encourage people to click to raise their revenue. There are also sites out there that pay people to click – they’re harder to catch, since they often mask IP addresses. Using careful research, you can find out whether you’re being hit by click fraud, and get in touch with the service that’s hosting your PPC ads. Be sure to collect all your information in detail, so you’ll have the evidence to back up your case. That’s the best way to cut down on lost advertising money.

Make sure that the people who are clicking on your ads are real prospects. Examine the results to keep click fraud from being a problem. It might take a little time, but in the long run, it’s definitely worth it!

Sell Benefits, Not Features

Whenever you need to sell something, how do you introduce it to potential buyers? The most natural thing for us to do is to start describing the product itself. In other words, to start describing its features. The problem with this approach? It doesn’t sell! It will simply bore the customer and make you lose his attention.
If you want to sell, you need to start with the benefits and value that your product will bring to the life of your customers. Sure, down the road you’ll need to actually describe the product features (cause people want to know what they are actually buying), but you only do that once the customer is already convinced to buy your product.
I’ll give you an example to illustrate my point. Suppose that you are a bit over weight, and you are looking for an ebook to guide you through the process of losing that extra weight. You visit the sales page of two weight-loss ebooks. Ebook A has the following bullet points right on top of the page:
  • 176 pages full of content!
  • Illustrations about exercises.
  • A complete list of food you are not supposed to eat.
  • Immediate download after you buy.
Ebook B, on the other hand, starts with the following bullet points:
  • Techniques to start burning fat today!
  • Lose up to 10 pounds in the first 2 weeks!
  • Discover the 5 best exercises to slim down.
  • Become healthier and more attractive at the same time!
If you could keep reading only one of the sales page, which one would it be? Probably the second one, cause it’s describes exactly what you are looking for, right?
In fact that’s the logic behind the theory: customers don’t want your product, they want the benefit that your product will bring to them. In the example above you can clearly see that. Over weight customers don’t care if an ebook is red, yellow, with or without illustrations, with 10 or 200 pages. All they care is whether or not they will lose weight using it. That’s what they are willing to pay for.
Bottom line: whenever you need to sell something, always start with the benefits. After all that’s what the customer is looking for.

How to Write a Novel Using the Web

It took five years for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to go from idea to finished manuscript, but the results have very clearly been nothing short of spectacular. Perhaps you also have an idea for a novel kicking around in your head. Maybe it came to you in the shower one morning before work, or maybe it came to you one evening on the commute home. Maybe you're planning to participate in National Novel Writing Month in November. Whatever the case, writing a novel is an ambitious endeavor, but one that the web is making a lot easier to accomplish.
Though you'll still have to do your writing using the old fashioned method — one word at a time — web applications and social media have made the process of writing a novel considerably easier and arguably more enjoyable. Here is a toolkit for using the web to write a book. If you know of any other great applications useful to aspiring writers, please leave them in the comments.

1. Organize

One of the most important and perhaps most often overlooked aspects of writing a novel is staying organized. Without organization, it can make the already daunting task of putting your ideas down on paper even more difficult. Characters and places can become confused and the timeline of events in your novel can get mixed up in a hurry.
While your idea is still in the brainstorming phase, many people find it helpful to create a mind map as a way to figure out how all the events and characters in your story tie together. One of the best mind mapping applications on the web is Mindmeister, which gives users a way to create, edit, and collaborate on mind maps in an intuitive and visual manner. Once you know who your characters are and how they interact, you can start laying out the progression of your novel and keep track of what you still need to write by using an outline created using Loosestitch, and a timeline created using Timeglider. Both tools will help you visualize your novel while you put it down on paper so you always know what comes next and how the pieces that you're writing will fit together.
timeglider
If your story is very character heavy, keeping track of all the people in your novel, who they are, and how they interact will be vital to making sure the continuity isn't interrupted. It may seem silly to treat your fictional characters as real people, but using an online CRM application like Highrise (which offers a free account good for 250 characters), can be a great way to keep track of the people in your book. Create an entry for each character and treat them like real people, attaching notes about their interactions, histories, and characteristics as you write.
highrise
To make sure you never forget an idea, check out Evernote, which is one of the web's best note taking apps. It allows you to sync together text, audio, video, and images and offers mobile applications so you can be sure you'll have a record of your thoughts any time inspiration strikes.

2. Research

Even if your novel takes place in a completely imagined fantasy world, research into the real world may be necessary to make sure your book has the level of realism necessary to allow readers to suspend belief and really identify with your story and characters. Research used to mean hours in the library pouring over dusty tomes, but the web is changing that.
Online resources like Wikipedia and Google Books give you access to thousands of articles and volumes on a wide range of subjects. If you need to know, for example, about popular ladies clothing in Victorian France, there is no reason that information can't be found online (or at the very least, web research can provide you with a comfortable foundation on which to build with more in depth library research).
google-books
Though it costs $19.95/month, another good resource is Questia, which offers full text, searchable access to over 1.5 million books, journal and magazine articles, and newspapers. Be sure to also check out The Free Library, which has a library of over 5.7 million articles and books available, and the Smithsonian: Research page, on which writers can find materials from many of the institution's museum collections.
If you're suffering from a case of writer's block, a trip over to the Project Gutenberg page may prove fruitful. Gutenberg lets anyone read — for free — from a library of nearly 30,000 classic books. What better way to unstick your writing muscle than by revisiting the classics?

3. Write

Once you actually get down to the business of writing, the web can make that easier as well. If you need a full-featured word processor, the leader of the pack in terms of price (free), feature set, ease of use, and reliability might be Google Docs. One great thing about using an online word processing environment is that your work is stored online and can be accessed from anywhere. You can also collaborate on writing projects with fellow authors. One of my favorite books, Good Omens, by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, was written in the late 1980s by mailing floppy disks back and forth between authors — imagine how much easier it would have been for the two writers had they had access to a web app like Google Docs!
writingnook
For those who need a more distraction-free writing environment, check out the recently launched MyWritingNook, a full-browser-screen writing application that is great for just getting your ideas down without worrying about formatting or anything else. MyWritingNook auto-saves as your work, provides sidebar access to a dictionary and thesaurus (the sidebar can be turned off, though), and lets you easily create and switch between multiple documents, so you can separate chapters as you write. It's an ideal tool for your first draft, when the focus should be about the big picture and just getting your ideas out of your head and onto the page.
If you're a Mac user and a fan of the popular WriteRoom software, another distraction-free, full-screen writing environment, check out their new iPhone application. It automatically syncs with your WriteRoom files, and lets you read and edit on the go, including in landscape mode.
protagonize
Of course, the web is a social medium, so if you crave a more collaborative writing environment, look no further than Protagonize. Protagonize is a collaborative writing community on which writers share, develop, discuss, and refine works of creative writing with one another. In the nearly two years since opening, authors on Protagonize have shared over 25,000 pages of writing with one another.

4. Connect

Writing can be a very solitary task. The image we have of writers is often that of a lonely person, sitting in their attic or locked in a hotel room typing away until they go mad (like Johnny Depp's character in "Secret Window"). Social media has brought us all closer, including those of use for whom putting words down on paper is a trade.
One of the most established social networks for writers is Red Room, on which wordsmiths — including a large number of well-known published authors — connect and discuss their craft. Of course, the most well-known social resource for writers is probably Writing.com. Though it's a little old school, the site has over 650,000 members and thriving forums for writers.
redroom
If you're looking for feedback on your work, check out WritingRoom and 1000Keyboards.com, social networks targeted at authors that both offer peer review functions. Or visit The Book Oven, a new site on which users can upload stories and then invite friends, colleagues, or perfect strangers to help polish and edit their work.

5. Publish

It could take years to write your manuscript, or it could take a few weeks. But whenever you're done, once you have your book in a publishable form, the web can also help you get it onto bookstore shelves. Print-on-demand publishing services like Lulu and Amazon's CreateSpace can not only publish your book in a number and variety of great looking formats, they can also help you with the details, like securing an ISBN, getting your book listed in the Bowker's Books in Print catalog, and helping make your book available in store shelves — both real and virtual.
lulu
If writing is more of a personal hobby and not a vocation for you, then Blurb might be a good choice for printing your book up in a very beautiful and readable format that you can share with family and friends. Whichever service you choose, if you go the self-publishing route, you can make your book even more professional looking and make it stand out more on store shelves by having a cover designed by the crowd using a service like 99designs or crowdSPRING.
Before you turn to self-publishing, though, it can't hurt to at least try to find a traditional publisher. In that case, you'll probably need an agent, in which case AgentQuery is an excellent service. The site's free, searchable database of literary agents has gotten it recognition as one of the best web sites for writers by Writer's Digest magazine five years in a row.
So, now you have the web-based tools that can help you go from idea to book — the rest is up to you. Stop procrastinating and start writing. Good luck!

35 Best Tools for Writing Online

Whether you’re new to the world of authorship or a veteran trying to make the most of Web services and applications, there are a number of online tools for writers of all types. From blogging platforms to networking hotbeds, and job boards to real-world gatherings, and more, the supply of utilities is comprehensive, to say the least.
But finding them all can be hard-going, so we’ve taken the liberty to make the discovery process easier by arranging our top finds here for your perusal. Here are 35 of the best social media tools for writers.
Have one that you'd recommend? Tell us about your favorites in the comments!

Word Processing

As a writer, you may have grown comfortable with applications like Microsoft Word, the Open Office equivalent, or more basic text editors like Notepad for Windows or the Mac OS X mainstay known as TextEdit. But as you spend more time consuming information in your web browser, you might have a growing interest in producing material through the same piece of software. In that case, here are several that will likely suit most, if not all of your needs as narrator:

Google Docs - This is perhaps the most frequently mentioned processor of its kind, simply for the fact that it is a Google property. Whether the name association is good or bad in your eye, Google Docs is quite capable of replacing virtually all common tasks that your typical desktop-based whiteboard can manage.
Zoho Writer - This application is superb in all sorts of ways. It runs neck-and-neck with Google Docs insofar as features go, yet it’s got the added appeal of being an independent option. In a manner of speaking, Zoho Writer has big talent without the big title.
Adobe Buzzword - Like Google did with Docs (formerly known as Writely), Adobe purchased Buzzword. And like Google Docs and Zoho Writer, Buzzword happens to be a solid option. The most obvious difference with Buzzword is that the visual environment is considerably less light in tone. Adobe gray seems there to stay. Which has its appeal, we won’t deny.
ThinkFree Office Write - It doesn’t get spoken about very often, but ThinkFree’s Write application is able to swim with bigger fish if it's tasked to do so. You may like or dislike it for various reasons, but technically speaking, it’s quite fortuitous.
picoWrite - Among picoScribe’s suite of applications, picoWrite is the one that makes wordplay happen. It’s not the most glamorous item listed in this first segment of services. You might think the toolbar provided is quite unattractive, in fact. Perhaps that adage of “don’t judge a book by its cover” is apt to restate here, however. Give it a go if you feel up to the challenge.
Microsoft Office Web - It’s not available for all to touch and see, but it’s coming. If you’re a Microsoft Word devotee, and can’t imagine having to transition to another brand for your writerly needs, just wait and you shall receive.

Blogging

Some authors write blogs to complement their long-form work. Sometimes bloggers’ work becomes a long-form product. Journalists, meanwhile, are increasingly required to write blogs to get closer and more familiar with their readers. Social media is the general idea. If you’d like to join this increasingly mainstream movement among the industry’s professional keyboardists, here are several great picks to choose from.

TypePad - One of the premier blogging services in operation today, TypePad, a Six Apart creation, puts a premium on ease of use and functionality. This month the company introduced an option for journalists to obtain a 1 year pro-level membership free of charge, ordinarily a $150 value. They call it the TypePad Journalist Bailout Program. In addition to membership, Six Apart promises visible placement on Blogs.com and enrollment in an advertisement revenue sharing program.
Movable Type - Also from Six Apart, Movable Type is more a business-level class of blogging platform, with emphasis on multi-user management and enhanced customization. If your fledgling blog turns into something of a phenom requiring incorporation and a full-time staff of 20+, Movable Type may be the thing to jump to.

WordPress.com - Renowned for its simplicity, openness and extensibility, WordPress.com is a hosted blogging service of immense popularity - largely because it’s free.

WordPress.org - You can roll your own blog with a custom WordPress.org installation on a server of your choice with a domain name of your choice. WordPress is the choice of many top blogs, including Mashable.

Squarespace - Customization is key with Squarespace, but it’s very much a visual experience. Almost everything can be handled with the click of a mouse, as opposed to WordPress.org’s sometimes granular, code-heavy makeup.

Blogger - Another simple and very popular blogging engine, Blogger is a Google-run platform that puts emphasis on the basics like none other. In fact, it might be considered too easy for some.

Microblogging

Taking the blogging thing one step further, microblogging restricts the writer to a 140-character-per-post exercise. As you might imagine, this requires inventiveness to produce qualitative and engaging material, whether it be conversational or promotional (or both). And there are a number of ways to go about engaging an audience in this fashion.

Twitter - The most popular and most recognized microblogging solution presently in play, Twitter has many functions. It’s used as a marketing engine. It’s used to talk to “followers.” It’s even used to chronicle poems and verse, as well as brief novella-like inventions. NYTimes reporter Matt Richtel is one figure who employed the platform for creative ends.

Laconi.ca - A microblogging service created in much the same way as Twitter, Laconi.ca allows users to do with 140-character messaging what WordPress.org is able to do with blogging. You create your microblog as you wish, invite whomever you like into the mix, and you’ve effectively got yourself a personal Twitter of your own design. It’s not easy to set up, mind you. But the challenge may prove worthwhile.

Facebook - A network of over 100 million people, Facebook is perhaps the largest purveyor of status updates on the Web next to nifty away messages posted by users of instant messaging services like AIM and Google Talk, et al. Status updates typically denote what a user is doing at a certain moment in time. But the ability to free-form one’s thoughts allows Facebook to act as a microblogging engine of sorts. If you establish a great network of people, the power of this can be extraordinary.

Jotting Ideas

Maybe you’re not ready to start on a book or short story or journalism piece. Maybe you just want to lay down your thoughts on certain matters to make better sense of your mission for a certain project. These services will keep those notes organized.

SpringNote - Founded on the wiki mantra, SprintNote is free, intuitive, enormously utilitarian, and even delivers an iPhone application to extend the experience. Because we all know that some of the best thoughts come when you least expect them - like when you’re walking a city street, without a notebook or desktop PC in view.

Evernote - This is a fantastic note management application that sports numerous access points, including the standard website, desktop applications for Mac and PC users, and even an iPhone-compatible application. All Evernote downloads can synchronize with a user’s account in the cloud.

Google Notebook - With desktop and mobile browser access, Google Notebook is simple, but powerful. Jot your ideas down quickly, wherever you might be, and have easy access when you get to your main terminal at home or at the office.

Zoho Notebook - Similar to Google’s application, Zoho Notebook puts emphasis on convenient information aggregation and collaboration. Need to run a concept by your editor for a manuscript or essay? This is a great way to do it. Wonderfully enough, login is provided for Zoho account owners as well as Google and Yahoo usernames.

Social Networking

Writers may not be the most social folks to roam the planet, but networking on the Web is all but a necessity for people seeking maximum exposure - and maximum sales! Here are several sites to occupy your time away from your word processor.

Red Room - A social network for authors to maintain pages and readers to get better acquainted with those they know and those they may not know so well. Red Room is packed with blogs, essays, videos, podcasts, events and more. It’s one of those places which, the deeper you delve, the more engaging it feels. And it’s still in beta!

Writer’s Network - What may seem a bit plain at first glance is in fact a surprisingly voluminous database of words and the writers behind them. It’s free, with plenty of tips, how-tos, and voting features to see how users rate your work alongside everything else.

Shelfari - A social network with emphasis on what you and others are reading, Shelfari is less about connecting authors to their fans than sharing recommendations and reviews. Of course, authors generally are avid consumers of content, and sometimes only reluctant producers, so sharing a personal library, even if you have an ISBN tag to call your own, might be a fun endeavor.

GoodReads - Similar to Shelfari but constructed in a way that more quickly grants users access to its various components and sections. Also, status updates were recently introduced to GoodReads. If nothing else, GoodReads can be highlighted for its independent role. Shelfari, alternatively, was recently acquired by Amazon.

Gather.com - This is a social network with wide-ranging subject matter, so it cannot claim to be the exclusive domain of readers. Still, Gather has its book clubs, which authors could certainly tap into.

LinkedIn - A website famous for its business networking acumen, LinkedIn could be where you introduce yourself to agents, editors, fellow writers and other valuable connections. Time spent here can be rewarding, for sure.

Facebook - You need only look to pages like that of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series, which have grossed roughly a half-million “fans” to see what kind of network effect you can get from Facebook. We mentioned it earlier in the microblogging portion of the roundup, and given the variety of active users, both in age and in occupation, it’s a clear fit in the social networking segment as well.

Jobs and Employment Resources

Hey, a writer’s gotta eat, eh? That’s the express reason for these two sites. Check them out, and if you’ve got suggestions for other services, shout ‘em out in the comments!

Freelancer’s Union - Want jobs? Want to meet important people? Want to advertise yourself and your business? Need insurance as an independently employed person? Freelancer’s Union delivers it all.

FreelanceWriting.com - It’s rough to browse and job leads can be a real pain to track, but FreelanceWriting.com presents lots of links. The more you frequent the site and watch the incoming streams of gigs offered to writers, the more you’ll get out of it.

Book Fairs/Shows

There are many book fairs that take place throughout the year, but there are some major hotspots that all but require publishers’ attention, and by extension, authors as well. Here’s a run-through of some of the majors.

Paris Book Fair - With a 2009 schedule of March 13-18, the Paris Book Fair is just one of the events each year in the French nation where celebration of ideas is the order of each day.

London Book Fair - This event takes places in the spring season (April), and is one of Europe’s largest and most important.

BookExpo America - Occupying the halls of the Jacob Javits Center in New York City for four days in May 2009, BookExpo America is perhaps the pinnacle of book gatherings in the US. Plenty of events occur in the American capital and places elsewhere to argue otherwise, but the name here speaks volumes. Pun intended.

Frankfurt Book Fair - Also one of the largest and most important of gatherings in Europe for the publishing industry, the Frankfurt Book Fair carries the torch for the global book tour each year in October. The 2009 schedule has it for October 14-18 to be specific.

iPhone Apps:

It’d be quite a feat of thumb work to punch out some serious, long-winded prose on your smartphone, but in the event that you want or need to read or blog an interesting bit of data, these iPhone apps make you that much more productive with your multi-touch screen.

WordPress [iTunes URL] - We noted both Wordpress.com and WordPress.org options in the blogging segment above, and we’d be amiss if we didn’t mention the mobile option for iPhone as well. You can access ‘.com’ and ‘.org’-style blogs with the application, as well as publish photos and preview such posts before they’re uploaded. The download is free.

TypePad [iTunes] - Yes, the competition between WordPress and TypePad carries over to the iPhone, and as we mentioned in a past review, the provision from Six Apart is aesthetically more pleasant and supports six languages in addition to English. It is a free download as well.

Stanza [iTunes] - A free application with the reverse purpose of purveying published works to the user, Stanza is as revered as any iPhone application released since the summer months. You can transfer books from the Lexcycle Online Library or text located on your desktop computer. Language support includes English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish.

Social Signals and Their Role in SEO

Greater onus is placed on social signals, or social ranking factors, than ever before. This article looks at the main social networks and which signals are given greater weight by the search engines.
The question of whether Google prefers social signals or traditional links is something of a moot point. The most effective search optimization campaigns are those that are loaded with high quality and fresh website content, and those that include a wide variety of natural links and social signals. Therefore, creating a website profile that includes links and social signals will give you the best results.

While links have been discussed at great length in many high quality posts on the Internet, social signals enjoy less exposure and coverage. So, what exactly are social signals and how can you go about developing them for the benefit of your website and your business? It’s worth noting that the exact weight of these signals is not known but they should all be considered important to the performance of your website within search engine rankings.

Facebook
When we talk about social media and social networking, Facebook is the first site that most people mention. It has the largest user base and is the best known. While it may not prove fruitful as a means of directly driving traffic to a site it is certainly worth consideration for the possible social signals that it offers.
Facebook Signals
Facebook Shares and Likes are important because they indicate that users are not only viewing your content but are passing it to those in their network and are bookmarking it for future reference. Comments indicate that your readers are getting involved in the discussions that you start. As with virtually all ranking factors, the authority of the Likes, Shares, and Comments that you receive will help improve their weight.

Twitter
Twitter has proven a beneficial marketing tool for many businesses and websites. A well-constructed Tweet can be seen by millions of people and a viral campaign can begin from a particularly appealing message. The brief nature of Twitter has helped make it popular.

Twitter Signals
In terms of social ranking factors, the number of Tweets you post is unlikely to yield any kind of benefit. Similarly, the number of followers you have will bear less importance than the authority of your followers. Mentions, retweets, and links within these disseminated Tweets are likely to have a big impact on your social media signals so look to create Tweets that are popular with a large number of high profile users.

Google+
Google+ is the newest of the three social networks but its affiliation to the Google brand gives it obvious relevance and importance. Ignoring Google’s own social network is folly and the rate at which the site has ballooned in user numbers is testament to the fact that others hold similar beliefs.

Google+ Signals
A +1 is deemed a digital vote of confidence for a page or post but it is the authority of the person that clicks the +1 button that will bear an influence on your rankings. Similarly, adds and shares will be considered and greater weight will be afforded to those signals that come from highly authoritative members. The rate at which your message spreads is also believed to be of importance and, bearing in mind how much control Google has over this particular network, the amount of influence that your Google+ account has is only likely to increase.

Other Social Media Websites
There are, of course, many other social media websites and while the three mentioned above are the biggest and most popular, it can pay handsome dividends to concentrate at least some of your efforts on more niche networks. The likes of LinkedIn have proven very beneficial for business users and professionals while YouTube and Flickr are excellent examples of social media sharing websites. Pinterest is one of the newest social media entities and it has already gained incredible value in marketing and specifically in SEO campaigns.

The Importance of Authority
When Google considers any social media websites and ranks social media signals, they are likely to consider authority as much as they consider total volume. They consider relevance, value, and authority to be more important than sheer weight of numbers. While it is relatively easy to buy thousands of likes it is much more difficult to acquire a few likes from high profile and highly authoritative accounts. This gives Google the opportunity to promote higher quality pages and sites within their own rankings.

Other Social Factors
It is possible that the search engines also consider other, perhaps less obvious factors. If they can measure the Click Through Rate of links and likes from social media websites then this would prove a valuable indicator of quality and legitimacy. The age of your account and how naturally your network has been built will also be considered where possible.

Social Signals And SEO
Remember that Google looks for quality above all else and in all of their ranking factors. They will give greater weight to social signals from the networks that they believe to be of a higher quality and they will give greater weight to the signals that they believe are a more accurate indication of quality. Don’t simply opt for a volume campaign when developing your social media and, instead, consider the quality. Of course, if you can develop a large volume of authoritative signals then this will give you the greatest results possible.

Social Signals and Their Role in SEO

6 Things You Must Do Before Publishing Your Articles

must do before publish post

There are some simple, yet imperative practices bloggers ought to put to work on their articles after writing and before publishing them, these practices aren’t compulsive but are essential for SEO. It is advised that bloggers should make sure their articles are search engine optimized, but this has never been compulsive, implementation of SEO is always by choice – but to a goal oriented blogger, these SEO practices should be compulsory. SEO tips are advice (no two ways about it) but are always rendered as recommendations, you may or may have not been putting these SEO tips to work, but if you start utilizing them, your posts may start doing better on SERPs and on the long run, your site will grow better in Google PageRank.

There’re several on-page SEO factors to put to work before publishing your articles, and what I’ll be covering here are certainly not all but are very crucial to a blog’s growth. That said, let’s run through the guide.

1)  Your title

Every blogger fights to get to Google’s first result page, but even on Google's first result page there’s still competition? It’s not enough to get up there on the top of a SERP but one still have to attract searchers’ clicks. Your title is the key thing that attracts clicks on SERPs, in other-words, driving traffic to your site. Someone else may have written about what you want to publish, so it’s important to add more techniques to your titles.
Let’s take an example, let's assume there are two headlines on Google’s result page and these two are containing the same information but are titled:
1)  “Recent Posts Widget for Blogger”
2) “Professional Recent Posts Widget for Blogger”
Between these two headlines, more people will go for the second choice which is tagged: “Professional Recent Posts Widget for Blogger” because they already perceive that the widget is not just a related posts widget for blogger, but also a professional one at that.
This also implies to making your titles catchy (simple but detailed, interesting but short – not just a broad title or a set of keywords), that way, internet surfers will likely hit your posts’ titles on search engine result pages cos it will become appealing by then. It is best to maintain a short title even as you implement this insight.

2) URLs (Permalink) optimization

Google pays attention to URLs; as a matter of fact, Blogger launched permalink sometime in 2012, so that blogspot bloggers can edit their posts’ URLs. After you must have written your title, the relevant words might not be there on the permalink (post’s URL), so in this case, it is important to optimize the URL, but as you do so it is best you follow good guidelines to optimize URLs. Blogger does a good job in choosing a URL for you automatically, that may save time but then Blogger might omit the relevant words (keywords) on your URL, as it generates the URL with the first thirty characters of the title. See example
Title: “Guest Post: How to Make Money via PTC”
Blogger may generate URL this way: http://worldwebsurers.com/2013/2/guest-post-how-to-make.html
Note: This was just an example for clarity.
What we are focusing on up there is the string of texts with yellow background. When blogger generates a permalink for you, it will work just fine but then it may not contain the most relevant words or the target keywords which are “make money” and “PTC”. Now, if I was to optimize this URL, here’s what I’ll do:
Permalink: http://worldwebsurers.com/2013/2/make-money-via-ptc.html
You see? Short but contains my target keywords, which are make money and PTC leaving out Guest Post and How To. Note that in some cases “How to” could be a keyword. Optimization of URLs depends on the keyword you’re targeting. See a live example from a Blogger Sentral post:
Title: “How To Use Effective Blogging Strategies in Place of Professional SEO Services?”
URL: “http://www.bloggersentral.com/2013/01/effective-blogging-seo-strategies.html”
URL optimization summary: Always make sure to keep URLs short, plus you should make sure they contain the target keywords of the topic.

3) Interlink to old posts

Every blogger who cares about growth must build a good habit of Internal Linking and should always put it to work – This practice is way too powerful to be neglected. Check out every pro-blog, you’ll see a related posts widget implemented under the posts – it is never omitted on potential sites, cos it actually adds value to a blog as it reduces bounce rate and increases pageviews, but it will surprise you that internal linking is 5 times (or even more) more powerful than related posts widget. It is a better way to recommend something to your readers – something related to what they’re reading, it serves as a map for Google to crawl through your site, it promotes other contents, it connects your whole blog, it passes the reputation of one page to the other, and it is closer to readers compare to related posts.

4) Make sure to set location

Setting the location of a post is a good thing to do in outsmarting your competitors on SERP, blogger.com gives you an option used by Google to detect the location where a particular piece of information (article) is meant for or would be more useful, and you surely rank better on that particular keyword in that chosen region. Google trends is good for checking where keywords are most popular, but may not always show location which sometimes results from low search volume. To set Location on blogger; click on Location under Post Settings on the right side of blogger editor, type in a region into the field provided and click Search (do not press enter, else it will publish the article), blogger will then fetch a recognized region on the field below the map. Click Done and that’s it.

5) Let your images do more

Using image on every blog post is a very good way to drive extra traffic, people use Google Image Search in searching for images day in day out, and Google does a good job in fetching images from websites to visitors and also drives traffic to the sites by providing means that searchers could use in getting to image source. But if your post images have no alt text, Google cannot tell what the image is, and that means it may not fetch the image to visitors. So it is important to write a short description of your uploaded images on the image alt attribute.

6) Grammar check

If you don’t normally go back to review your work before publishing them, I’d advise that you start doing that henceforth. Wrong spellings tarnishes your site’s image, trust me! If you are selling, this might cause buyers not to trust you enough to buy your stuff. It brings respect to naught; it divulges unreliability and gives you a poor reputation unless the reader has known you before. If you've made a mistake on spellings on previous articles, don’t sweat yourself over it, everyone, I mean everyone makes mistakes. But henceforth, make sure to check your grammar and spellings if they are correct before you publish your articles.
